Crystal Caves: A Sparkling Journey Into the Earth!
Share
What comes to mind when you hear the word "cave"?
An intensely dark cavern filled with gloomy pools of water, bottomless pits, and hoards of blood-sucking bats?
That sounds like a nightmare.
But stumbling upon a cave of luminous, glittering crystals?
THAT sounds like a dream!
Let's take a look at some of the most beautiful and captivating crystal caves in the world!
1. Mlynky Cave in the Ternopil Region of Ukraine
This cave is a popular destination for tourists, as you can easily book a tour through portions of these underground caverns. You'll see the classic stalagmite and stalactite formations, with many of these covered in gleaming, white, gypsum crystals. The true beauty of this cave, however, lies further in the tunnel system. These portions of the cave have been likened to viewing the universe! Walls, ceilings....nearly every surface is covered in millions of gypsum crystals. And with other mineral inclusions involved, ( like iron and magnesium ), the crystals take on hues from every color of the rainbow. Lush violets and greens to vibrant pinks and yellows offer an experience like no other. Unfortunately, these areas are only accessible to seasoned spelunkers-and mostly to those who are seeking to map out further areas. However, a quick online search of this cave will provide you with many incredible photos that will make you feel like you are actually there.
2. The Crystal Cave at Put-in-Bay, Ohio
Ever wanted to step inside a geode? Well, here you can! This cave, located at Heineman's Winery, is in competition to be the worlds largest geode! ( see cave #3 for the world record holder.) The crystals in this cave are massive celestite crystals! Enter this cave and you'll be entirely surrounded by luminous light blue crystals, some measuring over 3ft in width! Despite the density and size of each celestite crystal, they are quite fragile, so touching is off limits. However, visiting this cave will come with a bonus-a complimentary glass of wine and tour of the accompanying winery. Sounds like a must-see crystal cave to me!
3. The Pulpí Geode in Spain
Holding the record as the worlds largest geode, this complete cavern measures over 26 ft. in length, and over 6 1/2 ft. in width and height. What makes it so incredible is the size of the crystals within. Some of these selenite crystals measure over 6 ft in length. They are also notable because of their glass-like transparent quality. Guided tours are available through the mine that contains this geode, offering visitors a chance to view this unforgettable, natural phenomenon.
4. The Cave of Crystals in Naica, Mexico
Perhaps the most famous and spectacular crystal cave on the planet, is the selenite crystal cave in Naica, Mexico. There is truly nothing like it to compare. Massive selenite crystals, formed millions of years ago, measure over 40 ft. in length with a weight over 30 metric tons! Due to the extreme environmental conditions where this cave is located ( 122º F with 100% humidity ), it was never open to the public. After almost 20 years of research, it is now completely submerged in water after miners hit an aquifer. However, there are plenty of fantastic pictures and excellent documentaries available to help you get an understanding of the significance of this find. You'll definitely be amazed and see why some consider to be the 8th wonder of the natural world!
