Is Mineral Collecting Elitist?
Share
This is a topic I’ve seen discussed recently and I find it fascinating to consider.
When you think about elitism, it refers to a dominating exclusive group.
In mineral collecting, as with any hobby, there are going to be varying levels of experience, quantity, and quality.
And with any interest or hobby, there may be particular demographics associated with it because of the nature of the hobby itself.
But does this apply to the interest of mineral collecting?
For sure, there are levels of collections. Some have a wonderful collection of rare minerals that are micro mounts and were found, traded, or purchased for next to nothing. There are also some wonderful collections of minerals that are all under $100. And there are top tier collections, fine quality minerals that are available for high 5 figures-to 6 figures and up.
These specimens are not going to be in reach of the average collector. So, yes, only those with a particular income will be able to afford and collect them.
Is that elitism? No.
You don’t have to have deep pockets to collect minerals. Generally, the larger and finer quality the piece, the more it will cost. However, even with many wonderful specimens available at very low cost, because it is a “hobby”, disposable income of some sort is necessary. This may make it a challenge for some to feel like it’s something they could pursue when they have many other priorities in life that their paycheck needs to go to.
I have noticed an air of competitiveness at times, (particularly among the younger collectors age 18-35), but I think this is due to social media where you are more likely to see what others have and you don’t. Of course, anything that is exceptional is naturally going to garner more attention. So, maybe some with lesser quality or quantity feel a need to acquire pieces that have more clout.
Is this elitism? No.
In my personal experience, I have found the mineral collecting community to be very inclusive and welcoming. Even though my collection isn't extensive or filled with high end pieces, I haven’t found that a hinderance in being part of this community. Even from those long time collectors who have top tier collections, I’ve never felt excluded. Rather I have been overwhelmed by the generosity and eagerness of more experienced collectors to share their knowledge.
So, is the world of mineral collecting elitist? In my experience, no. But I do understand that being a hobby, income levels are probably going to affect the range, quantity or quality of minerals someone can attain. However, even if you start with a handful of druzy rocks found in your driveway, you should feel welcomed, encouraged and given due attention so you can nurture this wonderful hobby of mineral collecting!
